Winnie is one of those horses whose story will stay with us forever. She didn’t come into our lives because we were looking for another miniature horse—she came because she desperately needed someone to help her.
In the fall of 2023, we received a call from a nearby resident who had gotten our number through a mutual acquaintance. They had two miniature ponies they believed were sick and wondered if we could come take a look. Since they lived only a short drive away, we immediately headed over. What we found was heartbreaking. Winnie and her brother were both severely underweight—emaciated to the point of crisis. Her brother was the thinnest horse we had ever seen still standing. After carefully examining them, JR came to a sobering conclusion: they weren’t sick—they were starving.
Their condition wasn’t caused by disease, but by prolonged malnutrition. Their ribs and hip bones protruded beneath dull coats, their eyes were sunken, and they had little energy left. We gently explained the seriousness of the situation to the owners and asked if they would allow us to take the ponies so they could receive immediate veterinary care. Thankfully, they agreed. As we talked, it became clear this wasn’t a case of intentional cruelty, but a tragic lack of knowledge. The ponies had been offered old, deteriorated hay that contained almost no nutritional value. When they stopped eating it, the owners believed they were ill rather than slowly starving. It’s a lesson we continue to share today: before bringing any animal home, take the time to understand its nutritional needs, healthcare, and the lifelong commitment required to provide proper care. Education can truly save lives.
We rushed Winnie and her brother to the veterinarian that very same day. Despite her condition, Winnie still had the strength to fight. Her brother, sadly, did not. Shortly after arriving at the clinic, he collapsed. Although the veterinary team did everything possible, he passed away within 24 hours. Losing him was one of the most heartbreaking experiences we’ve ever faced.
Winnie, however, refused to give up. Little by little, she regained her strength, her weight, and eventually her confidence. We often joked that her feisty personality helped save her life. Even when she had almost nothing left, she still fought for every bite of food. That determination carried her through her darkest days. Although Winnie always remained a little cautious around people, she made incredible progress with patience, kindness, and time. Watching her transform from a frightened, fragile pony into a happy, healthy member of our little herd was one of the most rewarding journeys we’ve ever experienced.
Over the years, Winnie became much more than a rescue—she became family. Her resilience, quiet strength, and unmistakable personality touched everyone who met her. Eventually, the right opportunity came along for Winnie to begin a new chapter. She moved on to a wonderful forever home, and we’re especially grateful that she made the journey alongside her longtime companion, Eugene. Knowing they were able to stay together made saying goodbye much easier, and we couldn’t be happier for them.
Although Winnie and Eugene have started this new chapter, a part of them will always remain here on our homestead through their daughter, Birdie, who still calls Homestead Horsemanship home. Every time we see Birdie, we’re reminded of Winnie’s incredible resilience, Eugene’s unforgettable personality, and the lasting legacy they left behind.
Winnie’s story is one of hope, resilience, compassion, and the incredible difference a second chance can make. She overcame impossible odds, found the loving home she always deserved, and left our homestead far better than she found it. Thank you, Winnie, for trusting us, teaching us, and reminding us that even the hardest beginnings can lead to beautiful endings. We wish you and Eugene nothing but happiness in your forever home.
