Rosa’s Bay Lady — or as we lovingly call her, Lady — became part of our farm family in the spring of 2021 as a young, curious foal. She is the daughter of Grand Gesture (known to us as Jessie), and a full sister to Chantilly and Champ. Her registered name, Rosa’s Bay Lady, holds deep personal meaning — honoring not only a cherished Missouri Fox Trotter once owned by Jr.’s grandfather, but also paying tribute to our dear friend Paulette, affectionately nicknamed “Lady,” who held a very special place in our lives. In both name and spirit, Lady carries the stories of those who came before her.
Lady’s journey to us is one of serendipity — full of heart, hope, and a little bit of fate. Much like her dam Jessie and brother Champ, her story began during a simple breeding trip. We had taken our mare, Patty, to be bred at a nearby farm. While we were there, one particular mare caught our eye. Her elegance, quiet presence, and familiar look reminded us of someone very dear — our beloved mare Lucky.
We asked about the mare, and to our amazement, discovered that she was Lucky’s full sister — Jessie. Of course, we inquired about purchasing her. But at the time, Jessie was in foal, and the owners were hoping for a buckskin filly. They weren’t ready to part with her or the foal she carried. Still, we gave them our contact information, and as we left that day, we said a prayer for Jessie — that if it was meant to be, she would someday come to live with us.
Months passed.
Then one day, the phone rang.
The owners had decided to downsize their herd, and they remembered us. They sent us a photo of Jessie’s newborn foal — a stunning dark bay filly. She was everything we had hoped for… and more. We were speechless. And now, she was being offered to us.
When we brought Lady home, she was still very young and understandably timid. At that time, both of our daughters had horses of their own, and we wanted our son, Isaac, to have that same opportunity — the chance to bond with a horse from the very beginning. Lady was chosen especially for him.
She was nervous at first, unsure of her surroundings and of people. But Isaac, with his quiet patience and gentle heart, spent hours by her side. He sat with her, spoke softly, and simply showed up for her — not rushing, not forcing. Slowly, she began to trust. Day by day, her confidence grew. And with it, their bond blossomed into something truly beautiful. Watching the two of them grow together has been one of the greatest joys on our homestead.
Today, Lady has matured into one of the most striking horses in our herd. Her dark bay coat gleams in the sunlight, and her deep, intelligent eyes reflect the quiet soul we’ve come to know and love. But what makes her truly special isn’t just her beauty — it’s the deep connection she shares with our family, and the legacy she carries.
She is a living bridge between generations — between horses, friendships, and memories. Her presence reminds us daily of the things we’ve hoped for, and of how life often brings us exactly what — and who — we need, in the most unexpected ways.
We are endlessly grateful that Lady gets to live out her days here, at Homestead Horsemanship.
