Meet Birdie

Lineage:

Birdie is sired by our miniature stallion, Eugene, and out of our miniature mare, Winnie. Eugene was a handsome bay pinto/Tobiano standing at 30 inches tall, while Winnie was a beautiful solid black mare standing at 33 inches. Both Eugene and Winnie have since moved on to wonderful new homes, but they left behind a very special legacy in Birdie.

Birdie was born in the summer of 2025 right here at the homestead horsemanship. Though we were eagerly awaiting her arrival, she still managed to surprise us! Winnie had been showing signs of being close to foaling for weeks, and we had been carefully watching her every day. The night before Birdie’s birth, we noticed only the slightest change in Winnie’s appearance and thought we still had a bit of time.

Our plan was to move Winnie into the round pen inside the barn once labor began, so we could keep a close eye on her and hopefully capture the foaling on camera. But Winnie had other plans! When we went out to feed the next morning, there she was—Birdie! Dry, standing, and already running around. Winnie had delivered her tiny foal all on her own, quietly and safely.

Although we were a little disappointed to have missed the birth, that feeling quickly faded the moment we saw Birdie’s adorable face and lively little steps. She was healthy, strong, and so incredibly tiny. Birdie is our very first miniature foal born here on the homestead, and we’ve cherished every moment of watching her grow.

When Birdie was born, we noticed a unique marking on her side that looked just like the shape of a bird in flight. It seemed like fate, and the name Birdie fit her perfectly. She also inherited her sire’s beautiful coloring—just like Eugene, she’s a striking bay Tobiano, with rich tones and crisp white patches that make her stand out even more.

At first, Birdie wasn’t too sure about people. Despite all our time spent playing with her and showing her love, she kept her distance. But with patience, persistence, and gentle handling, Birdie slowly began to trust us. Now, she’s a confident young filly with a curious spirit and a sweet disposition.

She has recently been weaned and will soon begin more structured halter lessons as she continues to mature. Our goal is to raise Birdie to be well-mannered, easy to handle, and a shining example of what we love most about miniature horses—big hearts in tiny bodies.
