In September 2021, we welcomed an unexpected yet delightful new member to our family — a miniature horse named Daisy.
We received a call from a friend who, due to the demands of raising young children and a busy schedule, was looking to rehome Daisy. She wanted to ensure that this sweet mare would receive the time, care, and attention she deserved, and asked if we might be able to provide her with a permanent, loving home.
Initially, we were unsure. We had never owned a miniature horse before and had no specific plans to add one to our lives. However, just weeks earlier, our daughter Mary shared that she had been secretly wishing for a pony of her own.
Curious and hopeful, Jr and I made the trip to meet Daisy — and from the moment we saw her, we knew she was meant to be part of our family. The connection was immediate. Daisy was absolutely precious, with a gentle spirit and a sweet personality that captured our hearts right away.
However, she did come with a few challenges. Daisy had previously experienced founder and had struggled with being overweight. Thankfully, our friend had already made significant progress in managing her condition, but we understood that her ongoing care would require close attention. Her feet remained sensitive and could become sore from time to time, so we committed to staying proactive with her health and hoof care.
We brought Daisy home that very day — but decided to keep her arrival a surprise for the kids. We tucked her safely into the barn and waited for them to return home from school. Their reactions were truly unforgettable. The smiles, the excitement, and the sheer joy on their faces made it a moment we will always cherish. From that day forward, Daisy became a beloved member of our family.
Now, four years later, Daisy is still with us and deeply loved. She’s had a few flare-ups with her founder over the years, but we’ve learned how to manage it — keeping her grazing time on green grass limited and watching her diet closely.
Winter 2024 brought unexpected challenges. Daisy faced a serious health scare, developing gastrointestinal issues that led to ulcers and significant weight loss. For a time, we weren’t sure if she would recover. But Daisy proved to be a fighter. With dedicated care, patience, and a lot of love, she pulled through — and today, we’re grateful to say she’s healthy and thriving
While we don’t know Daisy’s exact age, we estimate she’s around 16 or 17 years old. She may be a bit older and wiser now, but she’s every bit as sweet and gentle as the day we first met her.
